FrostBlitzBanner1

Frost

(The Frost Chronicles #1)

by Kate Avery Ellison

Publication date: March 28th 2012
Genres: Dystopia, Young Adult

Synopsis:

In the icy, monster-plagued world of the Frost, one wrong move and a person could end up dead—and Lia Weaver knows this better than anyone.

FrostAfter monsters kill her parents, Lia must keep the family farm running despite the freezing cold and threat of monster attacks or risk losing her siblings to reassignment by the village Elders. With dangers on all sides and failure just one wrong step away, she can’t afford to let her emotions lead her astray. So when her sister finds a fugitive bleeding to death in the forest—a young stranger named Gabe—Lia surprises herself and does the unthinkable.

She saves his life.

Giving shelter to the fugitive could get her in trouble. The Elders have always described the advanced society of people beyond the Frost, the “Farthers,” as ruthless and cruel. But Lia is startled to find that Gabe is empathetic and intelligent…and handsome. She might even be falling in love with him.

But time is running out. The monsters from the forest circle the farm at night. The village leader is starting to ask questions. Farther soldiers are searching for Gabe. Lia must locate a secret organization called the Thorns to help Gabe escape to safety, but every move she makes puts her in more danger.

Is compassion—and love—worth the risk?

The Excerpt

My brother Jonn raised his head from the yarn in his lap at my entrance. He looked just like me—lanky limbs, a narrow, shrewd face framed by pale, red-blond hair, a stubborn sweep of freckles across his nose and cheeks like speckles on a bird’s egg. We were twins, and we looked it.

“Where’s Ivy?” I swept my gaze across the main room of the house. Dried laundry draped across my great-grandmother’s furniture, laundry my little sister had been supposed to fold and put away before I got home. A curl of anger kindled in the pit of my stomach—we were barely making quota, the winter storms were upon us, and she wasn’t even keeping up with the basic chores I gave her. She was almost fourteen—she was old enough to do her share of the work.

Jonn raised his eyebrows. “I haven’t seen her all afternoon. I thought she was with you.”

A little piece of my insides froze at his words. Our eyes met and held, and a million wordless things passed between us. I went back to the door and opened it.

Darkness was falling along with the snow. I hadn’t seen my sister in the village, and she hadn’t been in the barn. It was a small farm—just a round clearing in the woods, really. There was no sign of her in the yard. I shouted her name, but the wind snatched the word from my lips and flung it away. The Watcher Ward rattled above me, and the sound was like bones shaking.

My heart beat fast. My lungs were suddenly empty. I took a shaky breath and then exhaled slowly before turning to my brother.

“I’m going out to find her.”

Jonn looked at the fire. I knew he wouldn’t argue with me—he wasn’t the type to voice disagreements, especially not with me—but his whole face tightened and his lips turned white. “The Watchers...”

“It’s too early for Watchers to be out,” I said. “There’s still light left. Besides, nobody’s seen one in months.”

That was a half-lie, as their tracks were spotted almost every week crisscrossing the paths or wandering around the edges of the village where the border of snow blossoms was planted to keep them out. But it was a half-truth, too. We hadn’t seen them recently.

But Jonn and I knew better than anybody that there was still a risk.

“I’m going,” I said.

He didn’t reply, but I could tell by his expression that he was furious that he couldn’t go. He wasn’t mad at me. It was just the way things were. There was no point in wasting time talking about it, so we didn’t.

I pulled on my cloak again and struggled into my heavy boots with the snowshoes for walking on top of the snow. Opening the front door, I threw one final look over my shoulder at Jonn before ducking back out into the wintery evening.

It had grown colder since I’d been inside, or maybe that was just the wind stealing the warmth from my body. I padded through the dusting of snow that covered everything, cupping my hands over my mouth to call her again. “Ivy!”

Most of the time fear was just like a rat in my belly, gnawing and gnawing a hole in the same place day after day whenever I’d let it. But now the rat had turned into a lion, and it was tearing me apart from the inside out. I reached the edge of the yard, where the trees formed a wall of brown and green, and I stopped. The wind shivered through my hair.

“Ivy!” I screamed again.

She was always wandering the farm with a dream in her eyes and a song in her mouth. She had a head full of thoughts about things that didn’t matter and never would, and she didn’t have an ounce of sense when it came to our survival. I wrapped both arms tight around my middle to hold in the fear, and I sucked in another breath to call again when I heard it, lost against the wind.

My name.

Excerpt

When I look over at her, she’s twisting her hair, her eyes are wide and expectant, and her breathing is faster than it was. She’s nervous. “Is there any doubt in your mind which one I want more?”
She points to the computer in my lap. “Tell them, not me.”
“You need reassurances?” She nods but lets the question hang there. “You want a public declaration, just like I wanted a public submission?”
She nods again. “I don’t want to be your secret.”
“You’re not a secret. We’re tweeting as ourselves. Everyone can see it.”
“I don’t want to be your servant, either.”
“It’s a joke, sweets. Since when do you take it so seriously, anyway? You never took it seriously on the island. And you have to admit, I’ve been so much better since we came back to our real lives. I’ll stop with the jokes if you want, but that’s all it was. Am I calling you girl? Are you calling me Master? No. We’re in a different phase now, can’t you tell?”
“I…” She exhales and closes the laptop. “I’m not sure. I’m not sure what I’m doing. I need to go home. I’m really confused, to be honest. I mean, so much is going on outside this sanctuary. I’m worried about the fallout. I’m worried about my job. I’m worried about… you. And me. And I have to admit, you’re so much closer to the dream guy I envisioned now, it scares me.”
“Why?” I laugh, but I don’t mean it as a joke. I just don’t understand where she’s coming from.
“God, are you really that oblivious? Do I really need to spell out having your parents murdered, your life ripped apart, and the feelings that leaves behind?”
I close my laptop too, then put it aside. I stand up and scoot over to her lounge, moving her over and wrapping her up in my arms all in the same gesture. I place her on top of me, her head leaning on my chest. “I didn’t mean it that way, Grace. At all. I was just playing with you.”
“I know, but I have a hard time understanding when the game stops.”
“The game is over. I won. You’re mine.”
“That’s caveman talk, Asher.”
“Yeah. But it’s true. And it’s simple. I don’t think it requires explaining. But if you need it explained, Grace, I’m in love. I love you. It’s not even difficult for me to say, it’s easy. And if you need me to go online right now and say it in a tweet, fuck yeah. I’ll do it.”
“No, that’s not what I meant. Not really. You say I’m yours, but I don’t feel like yours.”
“Aww.” I squeeze her a little tighter because my heart hurts a little with her admission. “I’m gonna have to make you feel like mine, then?”
“Yeah,” she says in a pouty voice.
“Mmmmm, that I can totally do. Should we go out tonight? It’s not a good idea. The paparazzi will be on you for a while and I’ll probably end up in a fight if they get too close. But I’m happy to take you out.”
She thinks about this for a while and I let her take her time, just stroking her hair and relaxing. Enjoying what we have.
“It really doesn’t scare you?”
“What, sweets?”
“Losing.”
I huff out some air though my nose. “What should I be afraid of losing?”
“Me,” she says with an incredulous tone.

THE REVIEW

Hello!!

God's Play, is a novel with different viewpoints that enrich the content of the story. It shows the history of William and Toby, a hunter and shifters. Their fates are bound due to an accident in which both will have to find out who is planning to ambush hunters while if behind all this Cycle.

Well, I must start by saying that the title caught my eye, and I decided to give it a try. He needed something fancy these days. I do not regret is very entertaining if you are looking for this type of genre.

This weekend was my reading and had to make an express route in her development is good, although in some parts I had some mismatches or easy to miss details, in general the whole story is well written and note the author's imagination.

When it comes to a fantasy book, it is very easy to stop releasing the imagination and take items that we could know, in this case we shifters, and although I have already read them, it was refreshing to see them in action in this story, besides having a curious mixture of mystery that accompanies action and more characters that enrich the history of this singular pair or duo.

I think it is a simple, easy to read history, is light and if you have those moments when you're free for a while, really going to enjoy. There are more characters and I would like to see more development of them either in another novel or series, would be very interesting. I don't know, the author if you plan to get more books on shifters or continue the story of Will and Toby, but definitely has many roads which thread or pull. It is very rewarding and could be creating their own world very well.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review

Review

Our story begins presenting us Renee "Ren" Miller, our protagonist receiving a Knockout by life, but she will have to get up and face the following strokes or victories that life will present. Including his father, who decides to look after many years of absence, and which will have a few surprises along the way. He owns the down and out boxing studio: Beat and to Ren, this will be a place of physical and mental training. Including in the physical side, to the Dad's star fighter, Ash Fuller, sexy, muscled and tattooed.

Step long time since we had Amity Cross a new release book ... (ok, not quite, always tries to pamper their fans). When I heard about what he planned in his new release, Beat, from the beginning I saw work very hard and really amazes me how she can find to give a solidity to their ideas.

For my part, I must say I had my doubts, because, boys, girls, kittens of the universe, I'm not a fan of the struggles or fights, it's the last thing that i would watch on TV (when I watch it) or read, ok at this point my  level in sports  is zero. But since my level of curiosity when it writes Amity is big, do not hesitate to have me here, saying: I could reform me and see sexy  fighters occasionally to enjoy the view (or reading).

Amity created their own place fighting  in this book, you definitely have to read or add it to your list of books to read. Find a balance between toughness, erotic and dark so that is definitely something new to the author, with a bit of sarcasm in a few lines and with that characteristic style  leave us a ray of hope for romance, but taking us to the uncertain ways of what would happen until the end.

An explosion of the cosmos, fireworks and heat in the atmosphere, very well define the relationship between Ren and Ash, you will definitely feel the weather changes around,  Lick and sip a popsicle in your favorite flavor.

The characters are more mature in their development and will evolve as we are presented with the necessary elements to give us that blast, we have a well-balanced mix of characters, I must say I was surprised. The protagonists are in a limit at the beginning of the book we discovered Ren quickly but Ash ... uhmm, a good play Amity !! And oh god those villains! I myself wanted to kick them (Note: I still want and probably also in Pulse). I do not really define what achievement is my favorite of all, Ren and Ash have the same level right now everyone has something that makes me say ohh my favorite is !!! I want to see that has us more surprises this pair.

When I say that Amity managed to create their own place to fight in this book, is that really did was read the book and feel to be there, imagining movimentos has much ease when wanting to show that place and at the same time make us the emotions of each character.

All in good time !!! mua ha ha ha <- sometimes I think that Amity is so, each She are writing a final and is something that goes through my mind whenever I read one of their stories and get to the last page of the book, but not before probably be in shock, probably saying WTF or wanting to kick one of the protagonists or villains, and looking forward to reading the next part of the story.

If you are the first time that read something written by Amity, this is a good option to start a sweet addiction stories, because by the time you reach the end you inevitably you will want to have the next pulse of history.

If you like me, has already enjoyed the stories of the author, you will be happy, will enjoy this new story, you'll have a new sexy alpha guy wishlist
#LickTo, And definitely will be very happy with this new facet in the stories of Amity Cross.

Excerpt

My fist slammed into the heavy leather bag, the impact

jolting up my arm and absorbing into my torso.

The only light was from the back row of fluorescents

I’d switched on over the ring. It was dark, murky and helped me pretend I was

someplace else. The drama from the daylight hours was gone and it was just me

and the darkness. Exactly the way I liked it.

I began another set of punches, hair sticking to the

sweat beading across the back of my neck. Structure. This was the only thing

that was predictable in my life and I needed predictable.

Stance. Guard. Punch. Guard. Repeat.

There was a loud cough behind me and I spun on my

heel, heart thumping in my chest, and my gaze collided with Ash’s.

“Fuck,” I exclaimed, holding a hand over my heart. “Don’t

fucking do that, Ash.” Typical. The creeper was being all creeper again.

“What are you doing?” He stared at me, his gaze

hovering a little too long on my bare midriff.

I steadied the bag with one hand, taking deep breaths.

“What does it look like?”

“I’ve never seen…” He trailed off and I wondered if

I’d finally made the Golden Boy lost for words.

I turned my back so I didn’t have to look at him. “What? A woman in a sports bra?

Highly doubt it.” I rolled my eyes and wiped my forehead with the back of my

arm. Even though I couldn’t see, I felt his gaze burning into my skin and I

suppressed the urge to squeeze my thighs together. Infuriating, self-absorbed,

arrogant…

3  Creativity-Boosting Tips for Writers

Have you ever sat up in the middle of the night to write down a sudden stroke of inspiration? Or made a quick voice memo to yourself? Maybe jotted down a plot twist idea while you’re supposed to be working or studying?

For a lot of writers, creativity comes in waves. This is great if those waves are thrashing around like stormy seas, but at some point a writer is bound to hit a flat spot. And not the kind of flat spot that’s great for water skiing. This is the kind that leaves you stuck in the middle of the lake wondering how the heck you’re ever going to get back to shore.

Here are three tips to keep those creativity waves coming.

1. Write first thing in the morning

Writing when you’re half asleep has some pretty cool effects. You’re still partially in dreamland when you first wake up in the morning, so you end up writing stuff that you wouldn’t otherwise think of. Besides, it genuinely sucks trying to sit down and be creative after you’ve had all the day’s energy leeched from you.

The wee hours of the morning are also interruption-free—and if your attention span is anywhere near as pathetic as mine, this is vital to getting anything done.

2. Go for the third thing you think of

This applies to the big picture (overall plot turns or the outcome of a big scene) just as much as it does to small, seemingly insignificant details (a prop in your character’s bedroom, or a snarky line of dialogue). The first thing you think of is too obvious, and probably a cliché. The second thing is ok, but come on, you can do better. The third? Now we’re getting somewhere.

3. Step back. You’re looking at it too closely.

Seriously bro, give that story some space! Some aspects of writing can really kill your creativity jam—like spending twenty minutes trying to come up with the perfect synonym for “stumbled”. If you find your creativity IV drip running dry, you need to step back a little. Look at your outline, story notes, logline, whatever. Remind yourself of the overall goal of your story, and the original purpose you set out to achieve. Even better: get inspired by reading some books by other authors.

* * *

Summoning creativity is often just a matter of letting yourself go. Get crazy! Write down something totally weird. Don’t try and write perfectly—that comes later, in the editing stage. For now, embrace those waves of creativity.

What about you? What creativity-boosting tips can you share?
