The Collector of Dying Breaths

by M.J. Rose

Release Date: April 8, 2014

 Publisher: Atria Books

Hardcover; 384p
ISBN-10: 1451621531

Description:

From one of America’s most imaginative storytellers comes a passionate tale of love and treachery, spanning the days of Catherine de Medici’s court to the twenty-first century and starring a woman drawn back, time and again, to the past.

In 1533, an Italian orphan with an uncanny knack for creating fragrance is plucked from poverty to become Catherine de Medici’s perfumer. To repay his debt, over the years René le Florentine is occasionally called upon to put his vast knowledge to a darker purpose: the creation of deadly poisons used to dispatch the Queen’s rivals.

But it’s René’s other passion—a desire to reanimate a human breath, to bring back the lives of the two people whose deaths have devastated him—that incites a dangerous treasure hunt five centuries later. That’s when Jac L’Etoile—suffering from a heartache of her own—becomes obsessed with the possibility of unlocking Rene’s secret to immortality.

Soon Jac’s search reconnects her with Griffin North, a man she’s loved her entire life. Together they confront an eccentric heiress whose art collection rivals many museums and who is determined to keep her treasures close at hand, not just in this life but in her next.

Set in the forest of Fontainebleau, crisscrossing the lines between the past and the present, M.J. Rose has written a mesmerizing tale of passion and obsession. This is a gothic tale perfect for fans of Anne Rice, Deborah Harkness, and Diana Galbadon.

THE REVIEW

I must start by saying that this is the sixth book in the Reincarnationist series by MJ Rose

but I definitely I read this book independent, and can be read so as an independent novel.

The Collector of Dying Breaths , attracted my attention thanks to that title without forgetting its cover. Your content certainly is magical and descriptive, and your senses will be the order of the day . This novel revolves around the scent , it describes the feel and scent of a perfume, and in another way that feeling of touch , not stop to play with our imagination.

I was very excited when I started reading it, the story is rich in every sense of the word and I decided to take my time with this book, I wanted to discover every note of the essence and every detail were worth the wait. His spins, time changes at times to tell this story were very well maintained and it's nice when a book gives you that managing emotions and make you part of thems.

Weaving a story should not be so easy, but it easily accomplished for the author and has his characters stand each uniquely, making it even more exquisite. Help your senses, and why not, your heart to connect with the feelings of each, is a twist of emotions enjoy even if they are sad.

Love, suspense, historical fiction and are framed well on every moment of them in a magical and fascinating site, is not boring and keeps you in constant motion, definitely a story you can not miss.

I recommend it for every sweet moment, a sunny day, a coffee on a rainy afternoon in this place dedicated to your reading and a few drops of your favorite perfume.

THE REVIEW

Hello!Today I bring a different book to what I 've been reading lately , I wanted to give a little variety to my challenge , you know, go in search of new horizons. I received an uncorrected copy  of Bewitched in Oz by Laura J. Burns, the cover drew me (It's beautiful , I mean a redhead, that eye, and the title), I read the synopsis and decided to give it a try .

Well this story had divided me , has interesting things on that road was YA but then I took a turn to a more minor degree , sometimes entertaining to me , others not so much. Has defined the framework of a magical story coming out of what is known as OZ , and characters that have that urge to become part of this world , I liked his style, his way of being and with something unique in them.

It has a simple writing is not complicated and you can read it at any time that you make easy, you can spend time entertaining and like you saw a little movie inside a book, you could take it as a: "Ok, let's see how is this book "maybe my problem is that not well defined for destined to age of a YA oficially, even so try to enjoy reading with their pros and cons.

Quickly I read it in a Sunday afternoon, has positive things if you are a person looking to hang out and give a book a chance, maybe the case or also you're a fan of the world of Oz, this book is good and if you have doubts definitely not take it.

For me the book is somewhere in between and maybe this was not for me reading.

THE REVIEW

Hellou! everyone , This day we have a book that certainly has that essence of a YA with a touch of fantasy and fairy tale must not miss.

Do not fall tells us the more modern history, while taking the side of fantasy, and more adapted to the style of the author, of "Rapunzel".

Particularly I think YA lovers, the girls in love and looking for a love story, I will love this book. It has a clean touch of what we know in the stories and the natural charm of a story of fantasy .

Our characters are cute, and they naturally defined hooks you to them. The girl: Anya, his life is complicated, as it has many limitations, but it is to enjoy life through your photographic camera and some books. The only place she can visit the library sometimes is. The boy: Zander, about to go to college, is charming, handsome, intelligent and loves to read, and is the dream of every girl.

When Anya Zander takes a picture to Zander not wanting be discovered , the opposite happens, Zander realizes her presence and so begins this tale, but not everything will be easy, remember those limits? well, it's thanks to Anya's mother and a story that help the plot.

I liked this reading, was a breath and a moment of relaxation and wanting to enjoy such a real book, you'll remember the essence of a story of fiction, it is a small book that you will not have trouble reading because reading is very fast. I love the characters, they are a very cute couple and they could imagine each. His writing is clean and tender, beautifully weaves history with the element found.

The Review

BOOK 1:

Hello everyone!! When I saw the cover of this first book, I was curious to know what was hiding those hands and that clock , without doubt, the story behind this cover is very good.

It is a magical world and a well made, original story , with good characters actors , filled with many emotions and a clear and light writing.

The magic is present and will hand our protagonist Baxter , Our female protagonist, who gets her magical powers she turns sixteen eleven . Is determined and has a good grasp of sarcasm . And his way in this saga is about to begin , is a strong main character and very well run . You win from the start.

Besides the adventure behind the magic of Baxter, will be Declan and Jack. They will be willing to care for or want something more with Baxter, and time differently , and of course way into history.

I like the way that has story , is very imaginative , full of other fun moments of excitement and others with unexpected turns , that includes the end. It has a unique and distinctive style .

My Stars 4

BOOK 2:

In this second book we provide more twists and a significant change in the history of Baxter, we have more action.

Without leaving aside what had already been achieved with the first book, the author fills us with more intrigue mystery, emotion and of course the occasional funny moment with Baxter and his sarcasm.

The characters we already knew in the first book, evolucionarion gradually and significantly. And new characters take their position to go deeper into the world and fight against the enemy.

I loved the book, I definitely like it light, and keep the line work on the first book, but evolve in a meaningful way. The creation of this world and its characters is very clear and well maintained. It is a YA book you should add it to your wish list for reading.
P.S. I am waiting the 3rd book

Genres: Mystery, New Adult, Paranormal

NotQuiteDeadSynopsis:

A broken engagement sends Graciela Harper crawling back to Heron Creek with her tail between her legs, but finds the sleepy little town too changed to set her life right. Not even her budding drinking problem can obscure her Gramps’s failing health, or erase the mental picture of her first love happily married to her childhood best friend. To top it all off, she’s having a heck of time convincing the town’s dashing young mayor of her unfit-for-dating status.

When the ghost of 18th century lady pirate Anne Bonny starts insisting on a near daily audience, Graciela has to confront something else she never expected—being certifiably nuts at twenty-five years old.

Her brand new “I don’t give a crap” attitude makes it easy to dismiss the mysterious threats that seem to be tied to her search for more information on the long dead pirate, but when her family becomes a target, Gracie knows she needs to find out why the ghost insists on being a constant, reeking companion.

If Graciela can put aside her prejudice against people without a pulse, she may discover that Anne Bonny’s problems are intricately linked with her own. The past harbors answers could help the cantankerous spirit find closure, but she is, after all, already dead. If Graciela doesn’t move fast, she might find herself doing the haunting, instead of the other way around.

EXCERPT

Maybe it’s lingering fear of Anne’s ghost, or a sudden urge to burn some fat, but my feet find the sidewalk instead of my butt finding the driver’s seat of my car. I have an hour, and the walk will take fifteen minutes. I’ll regret it later, when the trek home in a hundred muggy degrees drenches me from head to toe, but that’s then.

I’m out to prove that I don’t give a shit about consequences after all. Fuck adulthood.

Avoiding my car turns out to be a moot point when, less than two blocks from Gramps’ house, the scraggly redhead from my backseat joins me on the sidewalk. Her gait matches mine, but her feet don’t make any sound on the concrete despite her clunky, knee-high leather boots. Lord if she doesn’t smell bad enough to gag a maggot, even outside.

Yesterday, I ran. Today, for some reason, it’s as though none of this is happening in real life and I don’t go faster, or slower, just keep going, eyes forward, clinging to the hope of waking up. It’s like swimming through the air with my blood pumping through me ten times too fast, depositing a chilly sweat on my brow and palms.

She doesn’t talk, but based on my sideways glances, the premise that she’s Anne Bonny seems legitimate. The smell and her stiff men’s shirt, trousers, and boots, combined with the sword and dagger belted at her waist, convince me that she’s Anne Bonny or that I’m going nuts. Or both.

The expression on her face wavers between frustration and sorrow, but nothing about it or her posture suggests causing harm is on her agenda. We walk side by side a few more steps, me and my reeking ghost, before my nerve returns out of nowhere.

Dead or not, she’s kind of starting to bug me.

"What do you want?" The question would sound more at home in the mouth of the first victim in a horror flick, but it has to be asked.

Even so, Anne—if it is Anne—doesn’t reply. Maybe she thinks it’s a dumb thing to ask, too.

"Okay, obviously you left your tongue in your grave. Let me guess, you want to grab a coffee and a bagel? I’m thinking about stopping at Westies, but I’m not sure…Oh," I gasp as my body turns to ice.

Fissure Excerpt

My tooth cuts into my lip as I stare at the box. The feeling of familiarity, of camaraderie, is there. Something in my brain wants me to remember, but I can’t reach those memories to explain why I want to talk about boys with her, play around and be plain silly.

Once again, pain surges as I think of how my mother did this to me. She erased Dare from my memory, not thinking twice about what she was taking away from me…a friend who belongs to this crazy Magical world, someone who would have been there to support me and talk to me before the Interment.

My mother might have been trying to protect me, but in the end, she failed. Not because she didn’t try hard, but because she left me with no recollection of the past, and no knowledge of the people around me, leaving me open to their attacks.

“There’s a part of me that remembers,” I say in a quiet voice, “but it’s like staring at a blank canvas after the pictures have been removed. There’s nothing, just the marks of the pictures that were once there.”

“Zachary says Mara wanted to protect you,” Dare says.

I open the box and pick up one of the pictures. I recognize myself in it as a six-year-old, running after a much taller blonde girl. Turning it over, I recognize my mother’s excellent penmanship: Dare and Baxter, East Hamptons, 2002.

“She did an awesome job,” I reply bitterly as Dare reaches for another picture from the pile.

“Hey.” Her eyes are as stern as her voice. “She did what she thought was best.”

“I know…but now she’s dead, and I’m left to deal with all this crap.” I try to speak as softly as I can. “I…I don’t mean crap-crap…I mean like…”

Dare’s smile is infectious. “It’s a crappy life sometimes. I mean, I can’t imagine that having people trying to kill you or take your ability is any fun.”

I nod. “I wish I knew more than what I do.”

“Well, you can start with these.” She picks another picture and holds it up for me to see. “And you can ask me anything. I’ll make sure to answer, and if I can’t, we’ll find the answers together.

About This Book

Fall to You is the second book in the Here and Now series. It is not a stand-alone and is intended to be read following Lost in Me. Hanna’s story concludes in book three, All for This.

Torn between two men…

When I woke up after the accident, I couldn’t remember anything from the last year—including my relationship with Max Hallowell or anything about Nate Crane. Now my memories are returning, but instead of answering my questions, they’re leaving me with more.

The man who broke my heart and wants to be my future…

Max is all I ever wanted, and now he wants to marry me. He’ll do everything he can to fill my life with love, family, and security. I need those things now more than ever. But can I trust him?

The man who stole my heart and wants to let me go…

Nate never made me promises, and I never asked him to. I’d been on the rebound, looking for a distraction, and he made me feel beautiful and wanted when I needed to feel those things most. He says he has to let me go, but what if I can’t let go of him?

With every revelation and every passing day, I feel more like Alice down the rabbit hole. I’m falling. Who will catch me?

Three Months

Before Hanna’s Accident

Nate

I haven’t slept all night with a woman next to me since before my son was born, yet here I am, holding her like I’m some closet romantic who doesn’t plan to send her on her way in a couple of hours. I loved every fucking minute of sleeping with her in my arms. I love how she reached for me in her sleep, how she rubbed her ass against my cock as if trying to wiggle a puzzle piece into place. And maybe a puzzle is the right analogy, because her body fits so damn perfectly against mine that I feel like something’s missing when she rolls away.

She’s on her back now, a hand reaching out, fingers resting on my bicep as if she’s afraid I might escape. The women I take to my bed tend to react that way, but I know it has little to do with my mad bedroom skills. For them, it’s about status, a notch in their bedpost of celebrities. What’s it about for Hanna?

The air conditioner cycles on, parting the curtains and bathing her in morning light that reminds me I should be urging her out of my bed. Only I don’t want her to go anywhere. I’m too enthralled by the dark smudge of her lashes against her cheeks and the soft parting of her full lips. She has these faint freckles across the bridge of her nose, another detail in this study in contrasts—the sweet, insecure virgin who doesn’t understand her own appeal and the wanton goddess who sucked me so hard and pulled my dick so deep she’s no doubt ruined me for all other blowjobs. And the way she responds when I touch her…

Hanna’s a virgin, but she was made for sex. Damn, how I envy the man who will get to introduce her to that pleasure. Will it be the ex? Max?

Something flames in my gut at the thought, but I ignore the flare of jealousy. She still loves him. I’m nothing more than the rebound guy, and I should be glad for that because I can’t offer her more than this.

“Mmm,” she moans, her eyes fluttering open and closed again as if she can’t quite convince them to greet the day. “What are you looking at?”

“You.”

She pats her hair before tugging the sheet up to cover her bare breasts. “Not much to look at before coffee. I’m probably a mess.”

“A beautiful mess,” I growl, tugging the sheet back down. “Don’t interrupt me. I was trying to play connect-the-dots with your freckles.”

She raises a brow but doesn’t try to re-cover herself. “How’s that work?”

“Well, they obviously start here,” I murmur, touching the bridge of her nose. “Then they pick up again here…” I drag my finger down her nose, over her soft lips, and to her collarbone, where a few more freckles are sprinkled.

“Not much of a treasure hunt.”

“Oh, you see, the amateur might think that’s the end of the trail, but I am an expert at connect-the-dots, and I don’t give up so easily.”

“Oh. Good. I was worried.”

I shake my head and press a quick kiss to her lips. “I won’t let you down. But are you ready for the next part?”

“I don’t know? Is it hangman? I’m not sure I want you playing hangman with my freckles.” Her smile damn near bowls me over.

“Still connecting the dots, but you see, it’s about intuition when the going gets tough like this, and for my intuition to work at its best, I need to stop searching with my fingers and take over with my tongue.”

She giggles. “Oh really?”

I climb on top of her, resting on my elbows, and she instinctively draws up her knees so my torso rests between her thighs. My cock aches, demanding that I slide up her body and get closer. Fuck. It wants more than to be close. It wants inside her. Tight and hot and deep. But I ignore it and lower my mouth to the freckles on her collarbone.

The taste of her skin on my tongue makes me hungry for more. I want to lick her clit again, to slide my tongue inside her until she loses control and rocks her hips in that sweet rhythm of fucking.

Instead, I trail my tongue down between her breasts and to the lone freckle beneath her sternum. “Found it,” I murmur before gently nipping her skin.

She arches toward my mouth. “Your tongue has a rather impressive intuition.”

“Oh, and it’s not even done yet.”

Once a college English professor, I now write full time. I live in rural Indiana, where, when I'm not writing, I get to hang out with my husband and two kids--a six-year-old boy and a two-year-old hellion, er, girl. Not surprisingly, reading and writing remain my favorite activities, though both come in bits and pieces these days, not the big hunks of time I enjoyed before I had children. When I'm feeling virtuous, I like to go running (I use that word liberally. I'm really, really slow) or do yoga. Don't worry, I'm always careful to balance out such activities with a hearty serving of ice cream or a chocolate martini.

THE REVIEW

When I decided to take the tour for this book review was done by l I caught his synopsis, and of course could not forget that curious cover, fresh, young and different.

I have enjoyed this year much genres of books with New Adult, Romance and each has its own particular style and point of view. With London Bound, Nana Malone tells the story of Abbie and great way to deal with her reality and decide she wants something better.

I was very attracted to see that jump Abbie and decides to give it that refreshing may come across things and among them at least waited for her, someone who wants to be with him, Lex.

That road will definitely not be easy when the two protagonists that we present here, have much to say in the past that the two are willing to leave behind and that means a lot in the future.

Enjoy the book has ideas and points that make the story interesting, and show that sometimes you have to face more problems face to move forward.
It has a very good line and present ideas, at some points in the story perhaps cost me delve a bit, but nothing that the author could not easily resolve to turn to delve into the story.

Its main characters are strong and clear line. Abbie, I think it's a strong character and very determined main character. I like taking charge of your life and her gradually evolving.

It has many points in its favor, and the story manages a diverse mixture of feelings. Many girls could be identified very well and if you're a girl or strong and looking forward to a rotation guy in your life, this book is for you.

EXCERPT

"Here." I hand him the charcoal rubbing and he takes it without getting up from the bed.

Sitting, he turns the paper around like a different angle will reveal more. The picture of the dragon is detailed with tiny scales lining its body and spikes decorating the curved neck. Large pointed teeth extend outside the dragon's mouth in a hungry snarl.

"What's this?" Ace says, pointing a finger at the symbols near the dragon's feet. “Moon type again?”

"Yeah.”

"And this is another message for you," he mutters without meeting my eyes.

"I'm positive." I want him to look at me and see how much I believe in this connection.

Then he lifts his head and shakes it slowly. "You're that girl who saves her fortune cookies, doesn't step on cracks, and picks up pennies, aren't you? You think these boxes and the words on the sides are like a bad luck charm."

I continue, despite the fact I want to throw him out of my head, out of my room, out of my house. I didn’t think this would be easy, but I hoped. "So what if I do? That’s exactly why I've noticed this message when someone like you wouldn't."

He shrugs. "And the fortune cookie says…"

"This character is a G, then an R, then I, E, and F," I state matter-of-factly while pointing each one out with my fingertip.

"Grief." Ace nods. He rubs his chin, which has grown flattering stubble. "The Moon type was used on these boxes and a title for each picture was placed on the embossing. Honestly, I’m amazed you’ve figured this out. It’s genius. Really. I’d never see this. But I think you’re reading too much into a drawing.”

I grab the picture from his hands. "If you think I’m a nut, say it. Go ahead." I trace the outline of the box. Then I open the book to a section I've paper clipped. "The UNIX timestamp is on this box as well." My finger caresses the paper.

"And the date is significant?" Ace leans in and he's too close. His fingers splay on top of the page and I stare at his hands instead of his eyes.

"The date is from last week. The night in the restaurant. The night JT was murdered." I glance up into his eyes to gauge his reaction.

His gaze moves from the paper to mine and back to the paper. "All right.” He pauses and stares at the paper. "That’s very odd.”

"I want you to have more than a weird feeling about it. I want you to say you believe me. I want you to open your mind to the possibility that this is more than a coincidence."

He studies me, his finger drumming soundlessly on my desk. "I don't believe in fortune cookies. And you want me to believe you've opened up the largest cookie in the universe. One that tells the story of what has happened in your life. Malerie…" he says. He takes both my hands in his. His strong fingers send a pleasant shiver down my body. "Now if you are about to tell me that this third box, the smaller one," he says as he opens the box I've rubbed, "if it says a word like infatuation, and this is where you finally hit on me, then it's a different story. One I'm totally on board with."
